UPDATED: Island Studies Lecture Series presents: Scale and Governance on small islands
UPDATE: This lecture has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 24 at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building.
The next Island Studies Lecture is Tuesday, March 14, at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge of 精童欲女鈥檚 SDU Main Building. Dr. Peter Buker will speak about scale and governance, including its effects on small islands such as Prince Edward Island.
The relation between a political jurisdiction鈥檚 scale and how well (or poorly) its government performs is seldom addressed in scholarly literature or in practice. However, scale does affect governance. This lecture addresses the question: how do size factors of population and geography relate to accountability and responsibility to efficiency and effectiveness? Citing political theory, public administration, economics, and social 鈥渟mall-scale鈥 literature, and taking into account technological advances, Dr. Buker will focus on how scale applies to governance. The implications, especially for small island jurisdictions such as Prince Edward Island, are many. For example, the case for and against Maritime Union can be explored by looking at the tension between small governing systems supporting reciprocal relations between their citizens and their government and large governing systems supporting one-way command relations.
Dr. Peter Buker is chair of General Studies at Yorkville University. He has a widely varied academic background in economics, politics, and community economic development, and considers scale to be one of the most important single factors affecting our experience as citizens.
Admission to the lecture is free. All are welcome to attend.
Watch for details for another lecture about islands April 18. For more information, please contact Laurie at iis@upei.ca or (902) 894-2881.

Winter鈥檚 Tales Author Reading Series presents Meags Fitzgerald, March 31
The next featured author in the Winter鈥檚 Tales Reading Series is Meags Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is a Montreal-based graphic novelist and memoirist, comic book artist, illustrator, story-teller, and improv comedian. She will give a presentation of her work at Charlottetown Rural High School on Friday, March 31, at 1:50鈥3:15 pm. Her talk is open to the public, but please do not park in front of the school, where buses will be arriving.
Fitzgerald鈥檚 graphic memoir, Long Red Hair, is 鈥渁 fascinating take on relationships, sexuality, attraction and individual boundaries鈥 (The Comics Journal). CBC Books named it one of the 鈥10 Great Canadian Books to Read during Pride.鈥
She calls Photobooth: A Biography a 鈥渘on-fiction graphic novel.鈥 A long-time photo-booth lover, she researched these once-vital and rapidly 鈥渇leeting machines鈥 in North America, Europe, and Australia. She constructed a biography of these booths through the eyes of owners, technicians, collectors, and devotees such as herself.
Fitzgerald鈥檚 comic books include Waxing Moon, about the intimate friendship of two girls, and The Village Under the Clouds, about an agrarian society, created by 鈥渉armonious鈥 gods, which 鈥渞elied heavily on trade, co-operation and trust鈥 for generations, and which is threatened when malicious 鈥渟econd-rate gods鈥 take over.
Her presentation is sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts and the 精童欲女 Faculty of Arts and Department of English, with generous cooperation from Charlottetown Rural High School. For further information phone 902-566-0389.

focuses on tissue adaptation and repair following injury with specific emphasis in the nervous and muscular systems. Since these processes involve stem cells, his lab studies the factors which control stem cell activity.
鈥淭his generous investment will greatly enhance my research capability and provide me the opportunity to establish the 精童欲女 Skeletal Muscle Health and Adaptation Research Laboratory,鈥 said Dr. Johnston. 鈥淭his laboratory, the only of its kind in Atlantic Canada, will be dedicated to excellence in research, training of highly qualified individuals, and fostering academic and industry collaborations.鈥
Dr. Johnston utilizes two laboratories on 精童欲女鈥檚 campus. In his biochemistry lab in 精童欲女鈥檚 Health Sciences Building, the funding will allow him to purchase specialized microscopes, a cell culture suite, and equipment to assist in studying gene and protein expression. In his exercise physiology lab in 精童欲女鈥檚 Steel Building, the funding will assist with several pieces of equipment to measure muscle and exercise performance, collect muscle biopsy samples, and oversee clinical exercise trials.
鈥淚nvestments in Canada鈥檚 research infrastructure are incredibly important to our nation鈥檚 future,鈥 said the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Canada鈥檚 Minister of Science. 鈥淭hey help us to attract and retain the very best scientists and give Canadian researchers the tools they need to perform excellent cutting-edge research, train the scientists of tomorrow and enable innovative new discoveries that improve our environment, economy and communities.鈥
Dr. Johnston鈥檚 research equipment is also generously supported by a non-repayable contribution from ACOA鈥檚 Business Development Program.
鈥淭he Skeletal Muscle Health and Adaptation Research Laboratory is the latest addition to the significant research capacity at the 精童欲女,鈥 said Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud to see this unique research happening right here in PEI, supporting our province鈥檚 growing biosciences sector.鈥
鈥溇 is delighted that one of the most recent additions to our faculty has been able to establish his outstanding research laboratory so rapidly and we are very grateful to ACOA and to CFI for helping to make that possible,鈥 said Dr. Robert Gilmour, Vice-President Academic and Research at 精童欲女. 鈥淲e look forward to many new insights from Dr. Johnston's unique and clinically relevant studies.鈥

Public Lecture: Windy Supermassive Black Holes, March 22
Dr. Sarah Gallagher, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Western Ontario, will be at 精童欲女 as part of the 2017 Canadian Association of Physicists Lecture Tour. Her talk, 鈥淭he Biggest Blowhards: Windy Supermassive Black Holes,鈥 is Wednesday, March 22 at 4:30 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242 of 精童欲女鈥檚 Don and Marion McDougall Hall. All are welcome.
Supermassive black holes reside in the centres of every massive galaxy including our own Milky Way. In relatively brief spurts, black holes grow as luminous quasars through the infall of material through an accretion disk. Remarkably, the light from the accretion disk can outshine all of the stars in the host galaxy by a factor of a thousand, and this radiation can also drive energetic outflows. Mass ejection in the form of winds appears to be fundamental to quasar activity and can be directly observed in many objects with broadened and blue-shifted UV emission and absorption features.
Dr. Gallagher will describe our model of the dusty wind and evaluate its successes and shortcomings in accounting for observed properties of quasars such their mid-infrared power and the fraction of hidden objects.
Sarah Gallagher is currently an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Western Ontario. Prior to that, she was an assistant research astronomer at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her research focuses on investigating the nature of winds from luminous quasars (accreting supermassive black holes at the centers of distant galaxies) using observatories covering the infrared to the X-ray, including two of NASA鈥檚 Great Observatories, Spitzer and Chandra.
The 精童欲女 prides itself on people, excellence, and impact and is committed to assisting students reach their full potential in both the classroom and community. Her talk will explore the implications and challenges that fulfilling the agenda will require. Hanrahan says the agenda is nothing less than 鈥渁n awakening of our human species to our relationships, responsibilities, and interdependencies with all created life and to the earth."
Her presentation, 鈥淭he International Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030: All Creation is on tip toe, to see the human species come into its own,鈥 begins at 1:30 pm, Friday, March 24 in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242, of 精童欲女鈥檚 Don and Marion McDougall Hall.
All are welcome.
