Every week, 精童欲女 Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to swimmers Rebekah Nitschmann and Matthew Smith, the 精童欲女 Panther Subway Athletes of the week for February 6-12!

Rebekah Nitschmann is a fourth-year Foods and Nutrition student from Perth, Ontario and a graduating senior on the 精童欲女 swim team. Rebekah swam her final AUS meet as a Panther this weekend, shattering a pair of 精童欲女 records in the process. She broke records during the heats for the 200-meter and 400-meter free swims, and broke them again in the finals for both races. 鈥淩ebekah is one of the hardest working and dedicated athletes I鈥檝e had the pleasure to work with,鈥� said coach Tony Theriault. 鈥淪he鈥檚 attended 99.9 per cent of scheduled workouts and has always given 110 per cent.鈥�

Matthew Smith is a second-year Biology student from Charlottetown. Matthew opened the Subway AUS Swimming Championship this weekend with a bronze medal and a new 精童欲女 record in the 200-meter free swim. He also broke school records in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and was a member of the record-breaking men鈥檚 relay team. 鈥淎 gifted swimmer, Matthew鈥檚 ability to perform at big meets always keeps it interesting,鈥� said Theriault. 鈥淗e's discovering true potential which is great to see in a swimmer,鈥� said co-coach Tony Theriault.

AUS Hockey quarter-finals begin this week. The Panther women take on Universit茅 de Moncton Thursday at 7:00 pm at MacLauchlan Arena. The men play Saint Mary鈥檚 University Friday evening, also at home, at 7:00 pm. Ticket鈥檚 for the women鈥檚 game can be purchased game day one hour prior to start. For tickets to the men鈥檚 games, the Bell Aliant Centre Box office will be open Wednesday from noon until 5:00 pm, Thursday noon until 5:00 pm, and Friday, noon until game time. Tickets can also be purchased online at .

精童欲女 Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 Hockey teams head into the first round of the AUS playoffs this weekend and both basketball teams host Cape Breton University.

The Panther women are paired against the Universit茅 de Moncton for the quarter-finals. Game one is Thursday at 7:00 pm at MacLauchlan Arena.

鈥溇�童欲女 Women's Hockey program is excited to be back in the playoff picture this year,鈥� said coach Bruce Donaldson. 鈥淲e clearly understand the challenges that U de M will bring to the game. Statically, we are very similar, with U de M scoring six more power-play goals and having stronger results at killing penalties. U de M has three very gifted players who we need to contain as well as last year鈥檚 top AUS goaltender between the pipes. On paper, this series should be a very entertaining one.鈥�

Tickets for the women鈥檚 game can be purchased on game day, one hour prior to start.

精童欲女 Men鈥檚 Hockey plays Saint Mary鈥檚 University at home Friday at 7:00 pm.

鈥淚t has been a year-long battle for us to secure a play-off position,鈥� said coach Forbes MacPherson. 鈥淲e are excited to get this opportunity to play SMU in the first round of the play-offs. We will have our hands full. SMU has some very dangerous players, and home-ice advantage, but we feel very confident heading into this series.鈥�

精童欲女 Basketball hosts Cape Breton University Sunday afternoon in the 精童欲女 Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre. The women tip off at 1:00 pm. The men鈥檚 game begins at 3:00 pm.

鈥淲e are looking forward to playing AUS-league-leading CBU on Sunday,鈥� said Greg Gould, coach of the women鈥檚 team. 鈥淭hey won our first meeting and are the only team we haven't beaten this year. Our team has been playing well lately and we are expecting a competitive game Sunday.鈥�

鈥淲e are very happy and pleased to honour our five fifth-year seniors Mark Matheson, Dut Dut, Jake Kendrick, Lorenzo Parker, and Tyler Scott,鈥� said Tim Kendrick, coach of the men鈥檚 team. 鈥淎ll of these young men have been a pleasure for me to coach and get to know. These five young men have brought a lot of great things to our program, but most of all, they have represented our program with a great degree of Panther Pride! Students from 精童欲女鈥檚 Department of Physics organized and hosted the 2017 Atlantic Universities Physics and Astronomy Conference (AUPAC). This annual conference brings together undergraduate physics students and university faculty from across Atlantic Canada to share research findings and stimulate new collaborations. Conference co-chairs Phoenix McCloud and Andrew Cameron, along with their organizing team, worked through the school year to make this year鈥檚 conference a smashing success.

鈥淚 congratulate our physics students for organizing and delivering an engaging scientific program, for hosting conference participants at 精童欲女 and for being exceptional 精童欲女 ambassadors,鈥� said Dr. William Whelan, chair of the Department of Physics. 鈥淚t is impressive to see students, many in their graduating year, take on the responsibility of organizing and hosting an Atlantic Canadian Conference. This is exactly the type of student-led initiative 精童欲女 should encourage and support.鈥�

AUPAC drew together more than 70 participants from across the region. The conference featured 40 research presentations by undergraduate physics students, including presentations by 精童欲女鈥檚 own Patrick Connolly, Patrick Strongman, Andrew Cameron, David Heckbert, Deanna Kerry, Phoenix McCloud and Aidan Tremblett. Dr. Whelan reports each gave an excellent presentation and congratulates Patrick Connolly for winning the Student Choice Award.

The conference included a presentation by Dr. Shohini Ghose (Wilfred Laurier University and a TED Fellow) on sexism in science. Dr. Ghose also moderated a panel discussion on Women in Science, which included local physicists and engineers, Megan Glover (精童欲女), Kelly Galloway (Engineering Technologies Canada), Reina Lamothe (PEI Cancer Treatment Centre), and Li-Hong Xu (UNB). 

Plenary talks at AUPAC included 鈥淲hat's the matter with our universe,鈥� by Dr. Stephane Courteau (Queen's University), 鈥淎steroseismology: dissecting stars,鈥� by Dr. Catherine Lovekin (Saint Mary's University), 鈥淟ightning and thunder in tissues,鈥� by 精童欲女鈥檚 Dr. Whelan, and 鈥淗ow to make a career from counting, floating, melting and black tape,鈥� by Dr. Jeff Dahn (Dalhousie University).

The next Island Studies Lecture features Island historian Georges Arsenault speaking about connections between Prince Edward Island and the Magdalen Islands. Arsenault has explored links going as far back as 250 years when Islanders sailed to the Maggies to participate in the walrus hunt. His lecture is Thursday, February 23, at 7 pm in the Faculty Lounge of SDU Main Building.

In more recent times, when the Magdalen Islands were part of the Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown, many PEI priests served in the Maggies while priests from there were posted in Island parishes. Later, more than 30 young Acadian women from the Island studied at the Havre-aux-Maisons Normal School and came back home to teach, mainly in Acadian schools. Since the early 1900s, young people from the Maggies have been coming to work and study on the Island. In the last decade or so, the PEI Acadian and Francophone community has cooperated with the Magdalen Islands to develop projects in both the cultural and economic fields. Arsenault will explore the many connections that have been forged over the centuries between these insular communities.

A native of Abram-Village, Georges Arsenault lives in Charlottetown. He is the author of many publications on Acadian history and folklore and a well-known lecturer. He is the president of the Sister Antoinette DesRoches Historical Society. Georges was recently made a member of the Order of Canada. 

Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Dr. Ann Braithwaite is professor and coordinator of Diversity and Social Justice Studies at 精童欲女. She co-authored this new book with Dr. Catherine M. Orr, professor and chair of Critical Identity Studies at Beloit College.

Everyday Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies鈥� is a guide to engaging students in the challenges and pleasures of thinking critically about gender, race, and sex today. By focusing on 鈥渢he everyday,鈥� it speaks to the importance of students鈥� understanding the taken-for-granted circumstances of their daily lives. Everyday Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies explores the idea that 鈥減eople are different, and the world isn鈥檛 fair,鈥� and engages students in the inevitably complicated follow-up question: 鈥渘ow that we know, how shall we live?鈥�

鈥淭his publication is of great significance for students from any faculty, even though it is most likely going to have the greatest impact in the Faculty of Arts,鈥� said Dr. Nebojsa Kujundzic, dean of Arts at 精童欲女.

Every week, 精童欲女 Athletics and Recreation recognizes two student-athletes for their hard work and dedication to their respective sports. Congratulations to Kiera Rigby (Women鈥檚 Basketball) and Ryan MacKinnon (Men鈥檚 Hockey), the 精童欲女 Panther Subway Athletes of the week for February 13-20!

Kiera Rigby is a fourth-year Science student from Charlottetown and a member of the 精童欲女 Women鈥檚 Basketball team. Rigby scored 20 points her final home game as a Panther, leading her team to a win 71-63 against Cape Breton University. She shot 40 per cent from the field and the three-point line. She also defended extremely well, said coach Greg Gould, holding her opponent to just six points.

Ryan MacKinnon is a second-year Business student from Summerside and a member of the Men鈥檚 Hockey team and plays defence for 精童欲女 Men鈥檚 Hockey. MacKinnon scored a goal and notched three assists in the Panthers quarter-final playoff series against Saint Mary鈥檚 University. 鈥淩yan had a great series for us,鈥� said coach Forbes MacPherson. 鈥淗e was a leader on the ice and in the locker room. We felt we were starting to play our best hockey of the season, and Ryan's play reflects that as well.鈥�

The City of Charlottetown bestowed a Heritage Award to 精童欲女鈥檚 Robertson Library at a ceremony Tuesday, February 21. The special award in honour of Heritage Day went to the library鈥檚 project: a collection of online research tools which has made a significant contribution to the City鈥檚 collective heritage.

The PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation (PEI MHF) recently honoured Dr. Edward MacDonald with its Award of Honour. Dr. MacDonald is an associate professor of history at 精童欲女 and a beloved teacher, editor, and author.

The Award of Honour recognizes outstanding service and continued contribution to the heritage activities of Prince Edward Island. Dr. MacDonald has become the 鈥済o-to historical guy鈥� on PEI for his wide-ranging knowledge of Island history, and his generosity in sharing it through his teaching at 精童欲女, his participation in public events which mark our Island history, and his encouragement of many others to research, write, and publish historical articles or manuscripts on Prince Edward Island.

Dr. MacDonald was one of three editors of Time and a Place, An Environmental History of Prince Edward Island, which received a Heritage Activity award for 2016, at the recent PEI MHF awards evening.

Dr.  MacDonald has written other titles of particular historical value to PEI: If You鈥檙e Stronghearted: PEI in the Twentieth Century (2000), and he was co-author of The Landscapes of Confederation (2010).

精童欲女 has joined the Canadian Bureau for International Education鈥檚 (CBIE) initiative to get more Canadian students to take advantage of learning experiences in other countries.

Reports indicate that annually only 3.1 per cent of full-time Canadian undergraduate university students have an education abroad experience. The number is even lower for full-time college students, at 2.5 per cent. This, despite reports from the students on the transformational nature of the experience, its many contributions to their academic and career achievements and its value in enhancing their communication skills, self-awareness and adaptability.

鈥淥ne of the pillars of 精童欲女鈥檚 current strategic plan is the 鈥榮tudent experience,鈥欌�� said Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, president and vice-chancellor of 精童欲女. 鈥淲e are improving student learning and experiences by examining what鈥攁nd how鈥攚e teach in support of 精童欲女鈥檚 vision of becoming a leader in experiential learning. The Learning Beyond Borders initiative is a crucial tool for us to increase the number of students participating in global exchange opportunities. I am proud that 精童欲女 is a part of it.鈥�

As a partner in the Learning Abroad Innovation Zone, 精童欲女 commits to identifying and addressing internal barriers to learning abroad and to participating in peer discussions with institutions across the country that are tackling similar issues and challenges. As a partner in the Learning Abroad Promotion Zone, 精童欲女 commits to contributing to a national communications campaign to promote the value of learning abroad to students and other stakeholders by creating and sharing content on the impact and outcomes of learning abroad.

 鈥淐anada is faced with the challenge of getting more of our students to take advantage of learning experiences in other countries,鈥� said Karen McBride, President and CEO of CBIE. 鈥淚t is time to leverage the leadership role of education institutions in a concerted and coordinated effort to give our generation of young leaders the knowledge, skills and global outlook they will need to thrive in our interconnected world.鈥�

CBIE will provide support by organizing webinars and thematic peer discussions throughout the year to allow institutions to discuss challenges and potential approaches to common goals, identify best practices and disseminate supporting research and case studies as needed.

CBIE will promote the initiative on its website homepage and create a special landing page to showcase all CBIE and institution created content. CBIE will also regularly share content through its social media and member communications channels.
