For the betterment of health services research

The Master of Applied Health Services Research (MAHSR) program is intended for students who are interested in pursuing a career in health research or in health services. A collaborative venture of Memorial University of Newfoundland, the University of New Brunswick, St. Mary’s University, and the ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®, this degree program is coordinated through the. The degree program provides knowledge and skills necessary to tackle complex health policy issues and contribute to the future of health services in Atlantic Canada.

There are two program streams to completing the Masters of Applied Health Service Research: aÌýresearch (thesis) stream (MAHSR-T), and a course-based (professional) stream (MAHSR-P).

Course Structure
Thesis Stream (MAHSR-T)
Ìý

Students complete three required and two elective courses and a thesis, and attend one workshop and approximately 12 seminars.

Required Courses:

  • AHS 6000 – Introduction to Health Services Research
  • AHS 6004 – Determinants of Health: Healthy Public Policy
  • AHS 6008 – Advanced Qualitative Methods OR AHS 6009 – Advanced Quantitative Methods

Thesis

  • AHS 6010 – Thesis

Elective Courses (choose two from the list below)

  • AHS 6001 – Canadian Health System
  • AHS 6005 – Policy and Decision Making
  • AHS 6007 – Knowledge Transfer and Research Uptake
  • AHS 6011 – Indigenous Health
  • AHS 6012 – Big Data Research and Analytics in Health care
  • AHS 6099 – Capstone Project
  • AHS 6110 – Special Topics
  • AHS 6120 – MAHSR Practicum

Students are required to attend the following:

  • One themed workshop
  • Approximately 12 seminars (scheduled throughout the degree program)

Professional Stream (MAHSR-P)

Ìý

Students complete four required courses, four elective courses, a two-day interactive virtual workshop at the end of the Fall semester of the first year of study and a practicum or capstone project. All students are required to participate in monthly seminars throughout the Fall and Winter semesters. Students in the MAHSR-P are not required to complete a thesis.

  • AHS 6000: Introduction to Health Services Research
  • AHS 6001: Canadian Health System
  • AHS 6004: Determine of Health

At least one of the following:

  • AHS 6008: Advanced Qualitative Methods
  • AHS 6009: Advanced Quantitative Methods

One of the following:

  • AHS 6120 MAHSR Practicum
  • AHS 6099 Capstone Project

4 electives from the following including:

  • One of AHS 6005: Policy and Decision Making OR AHS 6110: Special Topics
  • AHS 6007: Knowledge Transfer and Research Uptake
  • AHS 6011: Indigenous Health

Admissions Criteria
What's Required for MAHSR Admission?

MAHSR-Thesis Program (MAHSR-T)

This program is best suited for those with potential for self-directed, sustained research. Normally, the basic requirements are:

  1. a Bachelor’s degree of four years or a Bachelor’s with honours, or equivalent professional degree, from an approved university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or an average of 75% or higher in the last 20 courses;
  2. two references;
  3. a statement of interest, including research interests.

MAHSR-Professional Program (MAHSR-P)

This program prepares graduates for employment in a health-related setting and provides an avenue for current employees to strengthen their skills.

Normally, the basic requirements are:

  1. a Bachelor’s degree of four years or a Bachelor’s with honours, or equivalent professional degree, from an approved university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or an average of 75% or higher in the last 20 courses;
  2. two references;
  3. a statement of interest.

Students are expected to be proficient in the use of English, both written and oral, when they begin their studies at the ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®. Please review the English Language Requirements for graduate programs.

Application Deadline
Make sure you apply before the deadline!

The application deadline for the MAHSR-T (thesis stream) is March 1.

Although the deadline to apply for the MAHSR-P (professional stream) is also March 1, late applications will be considered if seats are still available after those meeting the deadline have been considered. Students will be accepted until the program has reached its full complement of students or the program begins.

For students applying to the MAHSR-T (thesis stream), securing a supervisor prior to applying is an admission requirement. Visit the Potential Graduate Supervisors page of the Faculty of Graduate Studies website for contact information.

For students applying to the MAHSR-P (professional stream), there is no requirement for securing a supervisor.

Master of Science - $9,220 per 2 year program
Master of Veterinary Science -Ìý$9,220 per 2 year program
Master of Applied Health Services Research - (MAHSR-P) professional stream - $14,340 per 1 year program
Master of Applied Health Services Research - (MAHSR-T) thesis stream - $14,340 per 2 year program
International students pay $8,010 per year in addition to full-time student tuition.
