Safeguarding Your Research

°Õ³ó±ðÌý recognizes that open and collaborative research is indispensable to pushing the boundaries of science and addressing complex economic and societal challenges. Research security is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a part to play in protecting research, including inputs, knowledge, and products. By adequately safeguarding your research, you ensure that you and your research team maintain control of your research process and outputs, including who it is shared with, when, and under what circumstances.

Research Services – General Enquiries

The Vice-President, Academic and Research, is responsible for research administration within ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®. Research Services consists of the Vice-President, Academic and Research and a team of administrative staff who work directly in support of research development and the administration of research funding. The office is responsible for:

  • fostering basic and applied research and building research capacity across campus;
  • acting as a liaison with granting bodies, contractors of research services, and other sources of research funding;
  • overseeing research policies, including compliance and integrity responsibilities of the institution;
  • keeping accurate and up-to-date records for all research funding applications, contracts, grants, and ethics protocols; and supplying reports on these activities to ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® and external agencies;
  • publicizing ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®'s research accomplishments;
  • acting as a faculty resource centre on research issues (e.g., workshops, funding opportunity promotion, contract and budget development, dealing with the media);
  • nurturing research-related linkages between and among ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® and other academic, industrial, public and governmental sectors; and,
  • supporting and facilitating the transfer of research and scholarly knowledge and technology.

Research Grants

A research grant provides financial support for an individual or group of individuals (or a research centre or institute) to research a particular subject area or field. Although the research area may be defined, there are usually no conditions about the research directions. If you are applying for External Grant Funding, these are the basic steps to follow:Ìý

  • Advise the Research Grants Coordinator of:Ìý
    • your intention to submit a funding application;Ìý
    • the name of the funder and program; andÌý
    • the deadline for submission.Ìý
  • For optional internal review (clarity, completeness, compliance with agency requirements, etc.), provide a draft of the submission to the Research Grants Coordinator no later than 10 working days before the funder's deadline.Ìý

Contract Research Agreements

Research Services is responsible for the primary coordination, negotiation, and administration of contract research agreements for ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®. Researchers should seek the advice and assistance of Research Services before making any verbal commitments on contractual matters. Research Services will work with the researcher to negotiate a contract that will satisfy the research requirements in a manner which complies with the University's research policies. Research Service's early involvement will help streamline the review and signature process and help avoid delays.

Any agreement pertaining toÌýresearch or involving a "6" accountÌýwill need to be forwarded to and approved by Research Services.

Research Accounting

Research Accounting plays an integral role in supporting the research environment at ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® by providing advice, financial accountability and ongoing management of all research funds. We work closely with researchers, administrative units, funding agencies and Research Services to ensure that funding guidelines and policies are followed. Research Accounting manages the post-award functions for all research grants and contracts at the University. Responsibilities include monitoring cash flows and expenditures, communicating with funding agencies and completing financial reporting.

Animal Care

The University Animal Care Committee has general responsibility for ensuring that the use of animals in research, teaching, and service at ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® conforms to the rigorous ethical standards of the Canada Council on Animal Care.

Biosafety

The ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® is committed to incorporating health and safety practices governing all personnel working with biohazardous materials in research and teaching activities at ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®, thereby protecting the safety of University faculty, staff, students, the public, animals and the environment. The Biosafety Committee reviews, amends and/or develops policies and procedures, reviews research and teaching-related applications for the use of biohazardous materials, and in conjunction with the ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® Biosafety Officer, ensures that laboratories are certified and containment procedures and equipment monitored.

Radiation Safety

The Radiation Safety Officer has general responsibility for ensuring that the use of radioactive materials at the University conforms to applicable standards. A radioisotope permit obtainable through the University Radiation Safety Officer is required for any work involving radioactive materials.

Research Ethics Board

The Research Ethics Board is responsible for administrating the approval process for using human participants in research at the ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®. All research involving human participants conducted by faculty, staff or students affiliated with ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® must be approved by the ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® Research Ethics Board. Research Ethics is responsible for ensuring that ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® is compliant with external research ethics guidelines and requirements.

Communications Officer

Research Services, working with ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®'s Marketing and Communications department, coordinates communications, government relations, and media relations efforts that positively position research at ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®. The Communications Officer is ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®'s outreach liaison to the external media and ensures that ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ®'s Research story is heard locally, nationally and internationally.Ìý

Purchasing (Procurement and Payment Services)

At both the grant application and post-award stages, complete and competitive quotations must be obtained for the goods and services required. This is to ensure the costing is accurate, the best value for money is realized, and funder requirements are met. Procurement Services works with the researcher and supplier community to satisfy these requirements in accordance with proper processes while minimizing the administrative effort for the researcher. The researcher controls the specifications and makes the final decision. Purchasing provides assistance in reaching these decisions.
