ADS Level 8 - Coordinator - Institute of Island Studies - Faculty of Arts
$70,118 to $77,008 per annum, prorated to time and term, as per CUPE 1870
May 1, 2024 – April 30, 2025 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding, and departmental requirements)
Since its founding in June 1985, the principal activities of the Institute of Island Studies (IIS) have been the initiation and co-ordination of academic programs, research projects, and public engagement activities. Areas of special interest have included Prince Edward Island culture, sustainable development, land use, and evidence-based policymaking, as well as the comparative study of small islands globally. The IIS is also home to the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability and an expanded policy hub focusing on Prince Edward Island policy.
The IIS has a four-point mandate to:
• Encourage a deep knowledge, understanding, and expression of Prince Edward Island
• Serve as a bridge between the University and Island communities
• Contribute to the formulation of public policy in Prince Edward Island
• Undertake comparative studies of Prince Edward Island and other islands
The Coordinator of the IIS will carry out the activities of the IIS, including the UNESCO Chair and policy hub, under the direction and supervision of the Chair of the Executive Committee of the IIS.
The position requires a high level of attention to detail working with budgets and written material for the University community and the public, as well as for local, regional, national, and international Island Studies academic, government, and NGO colleagues
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful applicant, reporting to the Chair of the Institute of Island Studies Executive Committee will provide the following:
- Participate in strategic planning for the IIS and in development of policies and procedures for its operation
- Assist with research in support of programming options being considered by the IIS, including an expanded policy research presence
- Liaise/communicate with local, regional, national, and international island studies institutions and colleagues
- Liaise with relevant programs and departments within the University, and work closely with the UNESCO Chair and policy hub lead
- Plan and organize lectures, conferences, and public forums
- Coordinate research projects
- Prepare agendas for, coordinate, and take minutes for meetings
- Draft media releases and public communications
- Serve as principal contact person for the IIS; and explore emerging opportunities that fall within the mandate of the Institute, particularly in the area of public policy
- Coordinate day-to-day functions of the IIS office; maintain the records of the IIS and create content for and oversee its website (WordPress site)
- Assist with the creation of budgets and financial plans for Chair’s review and Executive approval
- Assist in grant writing and fundraising
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience, but Master’s degree in Island Studies would be considered an asset
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with multiple partners across academic, government, and community organizations
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and extensive experience with, island studies and policy issues
- Demonstrate an ability to apply for funding and fund raise
- Experience in managing projects effectively
- Experience in managing a website
