The Department of Biology at the ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® invites applications from individuals who are interested in Student Field Technician position.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Student Field Technician will support the Van Den Heuvel aquatic laboratory:

 

  • In collaboration with graduate students and investigators, the student will coordinate and conduct estuarine field work for a sediment marine environmental quality project
  • Work includes trailering and boat operation for the collection of water quality parameters, deployment of instrumentation, and the measurement of seagrass coverage
  • Research may include snorkeling to collect plants or sediment samples
  • Lab analysis of plant or sediment samples will be a component of the duties
  • Work may also include assisting students in stream work such as the collection of eDNA, fish or water samples

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Undergraduate or college student currently enrolled
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work long days in the field
  • Experienced driver with two years of good driving record. Age 23 is the minimum age stated for insurance on ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® vehicles, but younger applicants can be considered on a case-by-case basis subject to insurance company approval. At least a two-year excellent driving record will be essential. Insurance company approval to drive ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® vehicles is a prerequisite to employment
  • Boat and trailer operating experience including a pleasure craft operator certification
  • Good swimming ability
  • Other safety or first aid qualifications an asset
  • Knowledge/experience in water quality instrumentation and asset

 

Priority will be given to ¾«Í¯ÓûÅ® students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and the Procedures manual.
