Student Assistant (Bat Health and Conservation) - Pathology and Microbiology - Atlantic Veterinary College
$17.05 per hour (+ 4% vacation pay)
June 3 – August 30, 2024
The department of Pathology and Microbiology at the Atlantic Veterinary College is seeking applicants for a student assistant position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work in the field with the project’s technical lead to participate in site visits at various locations on Prince Edward Island for assessment of habitat suitability for bat maternity roosts and set up and maintenance of stationary acoustic monitoring equipment and trail cameras to identify potential for bat occupancy and roosting activity
- Maintain the Bat Information Hotline operated by the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative, Atlantic Region
- Collaborate with other team members of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative’s bat health program to support ongoing North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) Activities on Prince Edward Island
- Opportunities for other activities as they arise (e.g., field or laboratory work related to specific research projects, literature searches, database searches, writing blogs).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of and experience with bats or bat biology
- Demonstrated field experience would be advantageous.
- Independent work habits with the ability to work well within a team is essential
- Understanding of biological science sufficient to integrate, assess and communicate scientific information is required
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
- Experience utilizing a variety of computer software programs is required (e.g., Excel, Word)
- Prophylactic vaccination against rabies is desirable
