The AVC Diagnostic Services is seeking applications from qualified candidates to fill a Virology Technologist Position at the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services. The individual will work as part of a team in the provision of the diagnostic virology testing services for the provinces of Atlantic Canada, other places in Canada and internationally. The individual will also be involved with virology test development (molecular and traditional) and its implementation, adaptation of test and laboratory investigation work. The person will be involved in certified testing by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canadian Animal Health Surveillance Network (CAHSN) and will be involved with the maintenance of ISO 17025 certification of RDVS laboratory by Standard Council of Canada.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform virus detection utilizing traditional technologies such as Fluorescent Antibody Test (FAT) in tissues, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and virus isolation in mammalian and aquatic species
- Perform molecular diagnostic testing technologies for detection of viruses such as qPCR, traditional PCR, RT-PCR, nested PCR and sequencing
- Perform manual and automated nucleic acid extraction for traditional PCR and qPCR
- Perform immunological diagnostic tests such as ELISA, Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) and Virus Neutralization (VN) test
- Perform day to day tasks related to infectious virus and molecular diagnostic work such as aliquoting of reference viruses and other infectious materials, aliquoting of molecular (primers and probes) and traditional diagnostic and research reagents and storage and inventory of these materials
- Perform troubleshooting work for molecular and traditional virology testing
- Prepare, organize, record, aliquot, properly store and discard diagnostic samples and materials
- Prepare Standard Operating Procedures, Biosafety Applications and other Quality Assurance and laboratory documentation
- Participate in research and development (molecular and traditional) projects of RDVS, re:
- multiplex assay development and validation, and other molecular assays for detection of viruses and other microbial agents in mammalian and aquatic species
- Implementation of tests utilizing new diagnostic technologies currently being developed in RDVS, e.g. multiplex assays, Sanger sequencing and new generation sequencing
QUALIFICATIONS:
- The successful candidate must hold a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science or Medical Laboratory Technologist Certification in appropriate laboratory disciplines
- Experience working in any of the following disciplines: microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or immunology
- Experience in a research and test development setting, e.g. diagnostic assays
- Hands-on experience in molecular diagnostic techniques, traditional PCR and manual and automated nucleic acid extraction technologies
- Knowledge and experience in aseptic techniques, cell culture and some immunological techniques
- Capable of troubleshooting molecular diagnostic technologies, e.g. qPCR
- Strong laboratory management skills
- Experience and knowledge in molecular cloning and sequencing
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience to present professionally in scientific forum
- Experience with molecular biology software tools, e.g. primer design, sequence alignment, BLAST, etc.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to collaborate with other sections of AVC Diagnostic Services, 精童欲女 and CFIA
- Strong people skills and strong ability to work with RDVS clients and stakeholders. Should have ability to work independently and as part of a team
