Cleaning Foreman - Department of Facilities Management
$67,546 per annum
The Cleaning Foreman supervises service workers who are responsible for cleaning university buildings resulting in an attractive, clean, and orderly environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The position also ensures consistent high quality cleaning standards on campus that are conducive to a safe and healthy environment. Campus buildings consist of over 1,500,000 square feet of space and cover a wide range of cleaning applications, from the high sanitary standards of veterinary hospital operating theatres to routine housekeeping of offices and classrooms.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Manager of Operations for Facilities Management the successful candidate will interview job applicants, selecting or recommending candidates for vacant positions
Provide orientation of new staff as outlined in the orientation program including explaining relevant university policies to cleaning staff
Train staff in cleaning procedures, proper use of cleaners, disinfectants, finishes and other products, operation of equipment and other matters related to the work activities
Evaluate performance of employees and provide positive reinforcement or oversee corrective actions as required
Make recommendations on matters of discipline, promotions, hiring, overtime, performance evaluations and other personnel functions
Ensure employee time and absence records are accurate and forwarded to the Operations Manager of Facilities Management on a daily basis
Ensure that cleaning services are adequately staffed at all times through work schedules and vacation schedules and arranging for the replacement of absent staff
Conduct a quality assurance program which includes regular inspections of work areas and appropriate documentation to identify work performance levels. Provide appropriate feedback to staff
Utilize workload management software to optimize cleaning zone areas
Assist in development of departmental budget and oversees operating budget
Determine special cleaning requirements by regular inspection and by consulting with end users

Assist in establishing and maintaining procedures including development and utilization of checklists to meet cleaning standards in specialized cleaning areas such as operating theatres, isolation areas, laboratories, dining areas and the sports centre
Participate in measuring the level of satisfaction on end users and making adjustments where necessary
Conduct regular inspections to identify maintenance issues and submit related work orders
Supervise the university waste disposal program to ensure staff are properly disposing waste
Requisition cleaning supplies and equipment
Investigate new equipment and cleaning supplies
Remain current on developments in the cleaning and sanitation field to identify operating improvements
Identify, remove or arrange for the removal of safety hazards
Coordinate WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety activities for the Cleaning Service and insuring SDS sheets are available
Oversee snow removal at building entrances as required
Participate on committees, as required
Other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful completion of grade 12
Minimum six (6) years cleaning experience, preferably in an institutional setting
Minimum three (3) years in a supervisory capacity
Demonstrated strong human resources skills including proven ability to listen and resolve staff issues, performance evaluations, and resolving personnel issues
Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures, equipment, cleaning products, chemical and WHMIS
Demonstrated experience in conducting quality assurance programs
Demonstrated computer skills, including word, excel, and email. Previous experience with workload management software is an asset
Successful completion of a recognized program of study in staff or department management
