精童欲女 Campus Food Bank to move to expanded location with dedicated coordinator in the new year
The 精童欲女 Campus Food Bank is relocating to the W.A. Murphy Student Centre over the usual holiday break with improved facilities and more resources to serve those in need better. The Campus Food Bank will reopen in its new location on January 8, 2025. Please see the list of local resources, below, that can offer support during the transition.
There are several reasons behind the move, all positive!
The 精童欲女 Chaplaincy Centre promotes spiritual well-being and religious harmony. From its beginnings in 1965, the Chaplaincy Centre has been a place to gather to replenish one鈥檚 spirit with friends and faith. The Chaplaincy Centre has always recognized the important role food plays in building community among students, which is why it hosted the food bank for so long. However, the food bank was outgrowing the available space, and Sister Sue Kidd, Chaplain, was also aware that her focus needed to shift back to the original mission of the Chaplaincy Centre.
Sister Sue said, 鈥淎s 精童欲女 committed to creating a culture of trust, safety, and inclusion, we at the Chaplaincy Centre noticed an increase in requests for a quiet space to be, that is open to all faiths and all seekers. This month, because of the relocation of the food bank, we will be able to open a new meditation space in the Chaplaincy Centre.鈥
Thanks to the efforts of Sister Sue, Student Affairs, Development and Alumni Engagement, Finance, and other areas across campus, the University has partnered with the 精童欲女 Student Union to hire Food Bank Coordinator Dayana Balqis who will work 20 hours/week to enhance the sustainability of the food bank. The University is grateful to the 精童欲女 Student Union for hosting the new location within their space on the second level of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre (also accessible by elevator).
The Chaplaincy Centre will continue to host the popular Soup for the Soul, Exam Chili and Daal as well as Pancake breakfasts as it also continues to respond to food insecurity through community building. Sister Sue, whose presence has been connected to the 精童欲女 Campus Food Bank since her arrival in 2010, will continue to support this important project as a member of the Advisory Committee.
Dayana is eager to open the new location in the new year, and with the support of the Advisory Committee, will be looking at improving offerings and expanding distribution modes that meet students鈥 needs. She said, 鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to settle into our new space and continue supporting the community in even bigger ways! We鈥檒l keep you updated on our progress and look forward to reopening on January 8.鈥
