AVC student recognized for equine research

Anam Hamza was the recent recipient of two awards for her research and work in the equine community.

The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the 精童欲女 congratulates Anam Hamza (MSc 鈥21), a third-year doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) student, on two recent awards.  

In September, Hamza attended the Calgary International Equine Symposium and won first prize for the Best Clinical Sciences Poster Presentation. Her research entitled, 鈥淩ecognition of stress levels in hospitalized equine patients during various veterinary procedures,鈥 was to determine a visual assessment method to identify and measure stress levels in hospitalized horses.

鈥淚 am very honoured for my research to be recognized in this way,鈥 says Hamza. 鈥淚 could not have done it without the guidance and encouragement from my principal investigator and supervisor, Dr. Laurie McDuffee, and the rest of my thesis committee.鈥

Hamza was also one of five recipients of the 2022 Merck Animal Health Scholarship sponsored by Merck Animal Health and The Foundation for the Horse. This scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to equine veterinary medicine and will be presented on November 20, 2022, at the American Association of Equine Practitioners Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

In addition to this, during the Atlantic Veterinary College鈥檚 Fall Awards and Recognition Night on November 9, 2022, Hamza received the Dr. Tom A. W. Taylor Scholarship. This award is given to a DVM student who is well-rounded, academically proficient, and has demonstrated initiative and interest in research activities.

鈥淎nam鈥檚 passion and dedication for equine health and wellbeing show through her research and training,鈥 says Dr. McDuffee. 鈥淲e are proud of the work she conducted during her master of science degree and are excited to see her flourish as a DVM student.鈥
