Background: | She was born Mary Margaret McAvoy on November 10, 1917, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her mother died giving birth in November 1923. Margaret entered St. Joseph's orphanage in Halifax in November 1924. She remained in the orphanage until June 1925 at which time she was sent to the foster home of John and Margaret Stordy in Kelly's Cross, PEI. The foster placement was arranged through the daughter of the Stordy's who was a nun at this orphanage. She attended Brookvale School. It is not known which grade she completed it was somewhere between grade 8 and 10. There is no record of her writing the provincial examinations. She married John Francis Griffin in July 1939. He was a farmer. They raised ten children; 5 boys, 5 girls. She was widowed in 1965 and continued to run the farm with the assistance of her older children. She worked outside the home both during the marriage and after her husband's death in order to support the family. She was a devout Catholic and strong believer in the value of education. Had it been possible for her to continue in school, her personal desire was to become a nurse. Three of her children attended SDU and 精童欲女. Her daughter, Dolores Griffin, created this bursary in loving memory of her mother. |
