Preference for student indicating relationship to CHSON nursing alumnae or staff.
Background: The Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing accepted the first class of nursing students in 1920. At that time, the hospital was run by the Sister of Charity (Grey Nuns). In 1925, the Grey Nuns were recalled to their Mother House in Quebec City. In the same year, the Sisters of St. Martha took over the administration of the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing and Directors of Nursing. In 1922, the Nurses Registration Act approved the Charlottetown Hospital as a qualified Nursing Agency. Over the years, the records imply several periodic revisions of the curriculum, enabling the School to meet the requirements of the Association of Nurses of PEI while promoting the high ideals of nursing embodied in the School. The number of nursing students increased almost every year until the last class entered in 1968. The approximate number of graduates from 1923 to 1971 was 775. The original criteria for this award was established to support the further education of the Schools's nursing alumnae or for a student directly linked to an alumna. In 2015, recognizing the growing difficulty in identifying a worthy recipient, and to honour the Charlottetown Hospital School of Nursing motto, "Minimus Mihi", the criteria was revised. The motto, meaning "Whatsoever you did for one of the least of my brothers and sisters, that you did unto me", called upon the nursing students to treat every patient, regardless of status, as special and sacred. 精童欲女 is honoured to have this endowed fund that will support this award in perpetuity and honour and remember this alumnae group for decades to come.
